The Federal Government has approved an increase in the feeding budget for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their orientation course, with implementation expected to begin next year.
NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this during an interaction with 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream One corps members at the Cross River State Orientation Camp in Obubra.
Nafiu said the Budget Office had been informed of the upward review, adding that the adjustment was expected to take effect in 2027.
He urged corps members to manage their finances responsibly, avoid extravagant spending and cultivate the habit of saving.
The NYSC chief also commended Nigerian youths for their resilience and commitment to national service, while advising them to prioritise their safety when travelling.
He urged corps members to avoid travelling after 6 p.m. and to continue their journeys the following day.
“Refrain from resting in public places and avoid sleeping in groups at filling stations, as this makes you easily identifiable,” he advised.
He also urged them to seek assistance at military installations, police stations or Department of State Services (DSS) offices and contact the NYSC hotline when necessary.
Nafiu further pledged to intensify engagement with relevant stakeholders to establish and rehabilitate infrastructure at the Obubra Orientation Camp.
He encouraged corps members to acquire practical skills that could improve their future prospects, including cosmetology and traditional hairstyling.
Meanwhile, the NYSC Cross River State Coordinator, Mrs Adejoke Oyenuga, described the Director-General’s visit as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare of corps members.
During a presentation on the camp’s status, Oyenuga disclosed that 1,064 corps members had been registered and had successfully adapted to the structured camp environment.
